Macbeth at Bard on the Beach is a Total Post-Apocalyptic Nightmare (In the Best Way Possible).

If you think you’ve seen Macbeth enough times to know what to expect, think again. This 2026 production, directed by Stephen Drover, flips the script on the traditional play and turns it into a gritty, post-apocalyptic horror show. It feels less like a dusty history lesson and more like The Last of Us meets Mad Max, and honestly? It’s brilliant.

Drover’s vision of a near-future wasteland completely ramps up the stakes. The atmosphere is heavy with paranoia, climate dread, and moral decay, turning Shakespeare’s classic tragedy into a high-tension psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Across the board, the acting company is rock solid. Munish Sharma gives  physical, haunting performance as Macbeth, and Tess Degenstein is chilling as his power-hungry partner-in-crime. There really isn’t a weak link in the entire cast; everyone brings an intense, raw energy to the stage that makes the poetry of the script feel incredibly modern and urgent.

But while the whole ensemble is great, it’s Steffanie Davis who absolutely steals the show.

Davis pulls off an incredible double duty, playing both Lady Macduff and the Porter, and her versatility is brilliant. As Lady Macduff, navigating the dangerous wasteland with a newborn baby, she brings heart-wrenching emotion to the stage that provides the show's emotional core. She completely flips the switch as the Porter. Drover cleverly updated the famous monologue to poke fun at modern climate change deniers and billionaire elites, and Davis delivers the comedy with razor-sharp wit and perfect timing. Getting an audience to go from heartbreaking tension to actual out-loud laughter is no easy feat, but she makes it look effortless.

Bottom line: this version of Macbeth is urgent, dark, and very well executed.
